Precious stones – The Dominican Republic has two unique stones not found anywhere else in the world. Dominican Amber and Larimar. The first one created millions of years ago due to the warm climate in the DR. The extinct prehistoric leguminous tree, Hymenaea Protera. Considered the finest amber available worldwide because of the high concentration of fossils. The second one, Larimar, a rare blue variety of the silicate mineral pectolite. The color changes from light blue, to green blue to deep blue.

Best Time to Visit

Best weather is December – May to avoid tropical rains or severe weather. May – June and September – November is the best value. Water temperature averages 83°F in the summer and 78°F in the winter, so no matter when you visit, the water is always nice and warm.

Language

Spanish is the official language of the Dominican Republic. Some English and French is also spoken by staff at hotels and resorts. Dominican Spanish is a subset of Caribbean Spanish.

Currency

The Dominican Republic Peso. U.S. dollars also accepted, and vendors may give you a better deal if you bargain with dollars. There are ATMs, and credit cards accepted at many retail shops. Although you’ll get a better deal with cash.
